The night of your reply, after I had installed the updated power driver, I closed the lid as usual at night. However, the following morning the screen lit up just pressing the spacebar an expected result but one I haven't seen in I do not know how long. That was a short lived sucess. Every morning since, the screen would not come to life regardless of what I did.
The interesting information is that it did not matter if the the lid was closed. In all instances the screen would not come to life in the morning the machine was on per LED's. I have to believe there was more than coincidence at work when the only instance of screen activation in at least months was after the power update. That correlation, if any, is over my pay grade ;-. I've had power set on commercial power to turn off the screen 30 minutes and not sleep.
My next test is set power to NOT turn off the screen ever on commercial power and see what happens in the morning. With power set to never blank the screen on either commercial power or battery, I closed the lid last night. This morning I could not get the screen to reappear absent a cold boot. Regardless, as far as I'm concerned, the problem is moot at this point. The solution is simple. I will shutdown the laptop at night. Since the problem does not appear after several hour durations, I have no problem during regular daily use on battery or commercial power regardless of how the screen off power setting is set.
